Active and Passive Voice Solutions (HS)

Active and Passive Voice

What is ‘Voice Change’ in English Grammar?

In English grammar, the term "voice change" refers to the alteration of a sentence from one voice (active or passive) to another. The two primary voices in English are the active voice and the passive voice.

Active Voice: In the active voice, the subject performs the action. The structure is typically Subject-Verb-Object.

Example: "The cat chased the mouse."

Passive Voice: In the passive voice, the subject receives the action, the prime importance is given to the object that how the action is done rather than giving importance to the subject that who has done it, and the agent (the doer of the action) may not be explicitly mentioned. The structure is typically Object-Verb-Subject or Object-Verb

Example: "The mouse was chased by the cat."

Voice change involves converting a sentence from active to passive or from passive to active while maintaining the same meaning of the sentence. The process often involves adjusting the verb form and reorganizing sentence elements.

For example, using the active sentence "The chef cooked the meal":

Active to Passive: "The meal was cooked by the chef."

In this transformation, the subject "the chef" becomes the agent in the passive construction, and the verb form changes from "cooked" to "was cooked." Understanding and being able to manipulate sentence structures in both active and passive voices is an essential aspect of English grammar.

Tense wise ‘voice change’ of Assertive Sentence

Note: Here, V1 stands for ‘present or base form of the verb’, V2 stands for ‘past form of the verb’, V3 stands for ‘past participle form of the verb’, V4 stands for “verbs with ‘s/es/ies’ suffix” and V5 stands for “verbs with ‘ing’ suffix”.

Present Indefinite

Active: Subject + V1 + (s/es/ies) + Object

Passive: Object + (am/is/are) + V3 + Preposition + Subject

Passive voice identification: (am/is/are) + V3

Note: Suffix (s/es/ies) can only be added when the subject is third person singular form.

Explanation: In the first example, ‘He kills a tiger’, ‘He’ is subject, ‘kills’ is verb and ‘a tiger’ is object since the sentence is in present indefinite tense. It is transformed into passive by following the formation of passive voice. The other two examples are also transformed into passive following the formations of the passive voice.

Present Continuous

Active: Subject + (am/is/are) V1 + ing + Object

Passive: Object + (am/is/are) + being+ V3 + Preposition + Subject

Explanation: In the above examples, the words like ‘tomorrow’, ‘next day’ and ‘next week’ are called ‘extension’ or ‘extra words’ and these should be placed at the end of the sentence. This kind of extensions may be in all tenses not only in Future Indefinite. And active voices are changed into passive by following the formations of passive voice.

Future Perfect:

Active: Subject + shall/will + have + V3 + Object

And active voices are changed into passive by following the formations of passive voice.

Imperative Sentence

Imperative Voice:

An imperative sentence is a type of sentence that gives a command, makes a request, offers advice or suggestions, makes proposal etc. It is used to express a direct order, instruction, suggestion, or encouragement. Imperative sentences often begin with a verb and omit the subject, as the subject is typically implied to be the person or group being addressed. Imperative sentence can be categorized as two types i.e., with ‘Let’ and without ‘Let’.

Without ‘Let” examples:

1.      Close the door.

2.      Take out the trash.

3.      Be quiet during the movie.

4.      Study for your exams.

In each of these examples, the speaker is giving a command or making a request, or making a proposal, and the imperative form is used to convey that sense of urgency or directness. In all the examples, the subject of each is omitted.

With ‘Let” examples:

1.      Let him finish his presentation.

2.      Let him write the letter.

3.      Let her sing a song.

4.      Let John express his feelings.

In these sentences, "let" is used to suggest or permit an action. The imperative form is still present, but it takes on a more permissive or collaborative tone.

Formations of Imperative Voice:

Without ‘Let’

Active: V1 + Object + (Extension)

Passive: Let + object + be + V3 + (Extension)

Example: (i) Do it immediately.

Explanation: Here, ‘Do’ is the base or present form of the verb, ‘it’ is object and ‘immediately’ is an extension. The passive form of the voice will be as-

Let it be done immediately. (Formation of passive voice is followed)

More Examples:

(i) Shut the door. (Active)

Let the door be shut. (Passive)

(ii) Drive the car slowly. (Active)

Let the car be driven slowly. (Passive)

(iii) Change the voice. (Active)

Let the voice be changed. (Passive)

(iv) Write the letter. (Active)

Let the letter be written. (Passive)

Note: If the active voice starts with ‘Do not’, there will be a little change in the passive voice depending on the expression of the sentence.

Examples:

(i) Do not go away. (Active)

You are ordered not to go away. (Passive)

(ii) Do not go in the sun. (Active)

You are advised not to go in the sun. (Passive)

Explanation: In the above examples, “Do not go away” and “Do not go in the sun” actually mean “I order or advise you not to go away” and “I order or advise you not to go in the sun” respectively. Since voice is also a kind of transformation of sentence, so keeping the meaning same, the passive voice of ‘Do not go away’ can be made as “You are ordered not to go away” or “Do not go in the sun” as “You are advised not to go in the sun”.

Again, if there is a direct or straightforward object in the negative imperative, the formation of the passive voice should be followed as-

Let + object + not + be + V3

Examples:

(i) Do not hit the dog. (Active)

Let the dog not be hit. (Passive)

(ii) Do not beat the boy. (Active)

Let the boy not be beaten. (Passive)

(iii) Do not close your book. (Active)

Let your book not be closed. (Passive)

(iv) Do not burn the paper. (Active)

Let the paper not be burnt. (Passive)

Some other examples:

Enter by the door

You are suggested to enter by the door

Come on please

You are requested to come on

With ‘Let’

Active: Let + pronoun + V1 + Object

Passive: Let + Object + be + V3 + Preposition + pronoun

Examples:

(i) Let her complete the work. (Active)

Let the work be completed by her. (Passive)

(ii) Let me do this. (Active)

Let this be done by me. (Passive)

(iii) Let John express his feelings. (Active)

Let his feelings be expressed by John. (Passive)

(iv) Let him play tennis. (Active)

Let tennis be played by him. (Passive)

Some other examples:

(i) Take your seat. (Active)

You are requested to take your seat. (Passive)

(ii) Morning shows the day. (Active) (not imperative but assertive amplification)

It is said that morning shows the day. (Passive)

(iii) Take care of your health. (Active)

Let your health be taken care of. (Passive)

Don’t and Please:

In imperative sentence ‘don’t’ in active voice is changed as ‘you are advised not to or you are ordered not to’ and ‘please’ in active voice is changed as ‘you are requested to’ in passive voice.

Examples:

(i) Please sing a song. (Active)

You are requested to sing a song. (Passive)

(ii) Don’t make noise. (Active)

You are advised not to make noise. (Passive)

Sentence with ‘Double Objects’

If an active voice carries double objects, to change into passive one object should be used as subject and the left one will remain after the main verb in most cases. Any object of the two objects can be used as subject but it is more usual to take the one which makes the sentence more meaningful. Two objects are respectively called indirect object (person or group of people) and direct object (thing or things) to give or pass something to someone.

Examples:

(i) He told me an interesting story.

An interesting story was told (to) me by him.

I was told an interesting story by him.

(ii) He gifted me a gift.

I was gifted a gift by him.

A gift was gifted (to) me by him.

(iii) He bought me a bicycle.

A bicycle was bought (for) me by him.

I was bought a bicycle by him.

(iv) My father promised me a doll.

I was promised a doll by my father.

A doll was promised (to) me by my father.

(v) She asks me a pen.

A pen is asked (to) me by her.

I am asked a pen by her.

Note: The verbs which normally carry double objects are hand, give, send, pass, throw, show, teach, tell, distribute, write, order, sell, lend, want, owe, bring, get, ask, find, make, cook, build, cost etc.

Voice with Modal Auxiliary

When an active voice takes a modal auxiliary verb in its structure, the passive voice follows the following structure.

Object + Modal Auxiliary + be + V3 + (Preposition + Subject)

Examples:

(i) We should love our country.

Our country should be love by us.

(ii) He must clear the ground.

The ground must be cleared by him.

(iii) She can do the work.

The work can be done by her.

(iv) We have to play football.

Football has to be played by us.

Note: ‘Must’ can be meant as ‘have to’ when the subject is in plural form, ‘has to’ when the subject is in singular form and it can be written as ‘had to’ when the sentence states past tense both with singular and plural form of the subject.

Remember that, when an active voice takes ‘shall’ or ‘will’ modal verb, the passive voice should be changed following the formations of their respective tenses i.e., simple future or future perfect.

Examples:

(i) He will read the book tomorrow.

The book will be read by him tomorrow.

(ii) I shall do the work the next day.

The work shall be done by me the next day.

(iii) Trisha will have submitted an assignment within Monday.

An assignment will have been submitted by Trisha within Monday.

(iv) We shall have organized a programme by Sunday.

A programme will have been organized by us by Sunday.

Examples:

1.      Who is attending the meeting?

2.      When will the concert start?

3.      Why did you choose this career?
