Most Important Preposition

Abide by (To accept or follow a rule, decision, or law)

Example: You must abide by the rules of the competition.

One must abide by one's promise.

Accuse of (To say that someone is guilty of something)

Example: He was accused of stealing the money.

Adapt to (To change to fit new conditions)

Example: It can take time to adapt to a new environment.

Agree with (With person)

Agree To (agree or disagree with a proposal, plan, advice, suggestion, etc)

He is agreed with me on this point.

He isn't agreed to my suggestion.

Angry with (with person)

Angry at (fault or mistake made by a person)

The captain was angry with the players.

Mother was angry at my misconduct.

Annoy with (With person)

Annoy at (fault or mistake made by a person)

The teacher was annoyed with the students.

Father was annoyed at my behavior.

Apply to (apply to a person)

Apply for (‘Apply for’ means to apply for something)

E.g.- I applied to the principal.

I applied for the post of a teacher.

Ask for (To request something.)

Example: I need to ask for a few more details before making a decision.

Believe in (To have confidence or faith in something or someone)

Example: She believes in hard work.

Blame for (To say that someone is responsible for something bad)

Example: He blames me for the failure of the project.

Break into (To force entry into a place, typically to steal)

Example: The thief managed to break into the house at night.

Across (Moving from one side to the other)

Along (It means moving straight)

He sails across the sea.

He walks along the street.

Beside (nearby)

Besides (in addition to)

E.g.-He sits beside me.

I have two pens besides this.

Blind to (completely fail to notice or realise something or ignore something maybe intentionally)

Eg: Do not blind __to_ your son’s faults.

Blind in (Unable to see)

Eg- She is blind in one eye.

Take care of something/someone is to be responsible or)

I take care of my car.

Care for (To look after or attend to someone or something)

I care for my wife very much.

Care about (something/someone is to be concerned about)

Concentrate on (To focus all your attention on something.)

Example: You need to concentrate on your studies if you want to pass.

Consist of (To be made up of or composed of)

Example: The team consists of five players.

Consist in (to be based on or to be within)

Eg- Virtue consists in goodness.

Cure of (To treat and make someone well from an illness)

Example: The doctor cured her of the illness with a special treatment.* 

Deal in (Business)

Deal with (Behaviour)

His father deals in grocery.

Die of (disease)

Die from (hunger, overeating)

Die in (war or accident)

Die by (Suicide)

Die for (for the sake of country)

Depend on (To rely on or trust someone or something.)

Example: You can depend on me to help you with the project.

Earn for (To receive money as payment for work or service) 

 Example: He earns money for his family by working as a teacher.

Excuse for (A reason or explanation for something)

Example: There’s no excuse for being late to the meeting.

Example of (A representative or typical case of something.)

Example: She is a perfect example of hard work and dedication.

Examine for (To inspect or test for something)

Example: The doctor will examine you for any underlying conditions.

Focus on (To pay close attention to something.)

Example: Please focus on the task at hand.

Form of (The shape or method of something)

Example: This is the form of the report that we need to submit.

Frustrated with (To feel upset because something isn’t going as expected)

Example: I am frustrated with the lack of progress on this project.

Go on (To continue)

Example: Please go on with your presentation.

Go with (To match or complement.)

Example: That shirt goes well with your jeans.

Get rid of (To eliminate or remove something.)

 Example: I need to get rid of old clothes that I no longer wear.

Good at (to have the ability to do something well, or to have the necessary skills, knowledge, or experience to do something well.)

For example: I'm good at playing football

Nick has always been good at finding cheap flights

Gift with (a naturally talented implying they possess a special ability)

Example: He is gifted with a good voice

Glance at (To look at something quickly.)

Example: She just glanced at the letter and put it down.

Help with (To assist someone in doing something.)

Example: Can you help me with my homework?

Hope for (To wish or desire for something to happen.)

Example: We hope for good weather on the day of the event.

Involve in (To include someone in an activity or situation)

Example: She got involved in charity work after her retirement.

Indulge in (To enjoy or give in to something, often in excess.)

Example: He likes to indulge in chocolate after a long day at work.

Impress on (To strongly communicate or make someone understand the importance of something. 

Example: I want to impress on you how important this meeting is.

Join in (To participate or become involved in an activity.)

Example: Would you like to join in the game?

Jump at (To eagerly accept an opportunity or offer)

Example: I’ll jump at the chance to go to Paris!

Jump into (suddenly become involved in a situation or discussion or direction)

Eg- He jumped into the swimming pool.

Look at (To direct your gaze towards something or someone.)

Example: Look at the beautiful painting on the wall!

Long for (To have a strong desire for something that is usually out of reach)

Example: She longed for a vacation after months of work.

Laugh at (To mock or find something humorous.)

Example: They laughed at my jokes during the party.

Live on (To survive or continue to exist on a particular thing, usually referring to food or income.)

Example: They live on a small farm outside the city.

Live by (livelihood/profession)

Example: He lives by begging

Meet with (To have a planned or formal meeting with someone)

Example: I need to meet with my supervisor to discuss the project.

Move on (To stop thinking about something or to progress to a new stage.)

Example: It’s time to move on from the past and look to the future.

Motivate for (To inspire someone to take action or work harder.)

Example: Her speech really motivated the team for the upcoming match.

Need for (To require something.)

Example: There’s a growing need for skilled workers in the tech industry.

Object to (To express or feel disapproval of something.)

Example: I object to the idea of working on weekends.

Prepare for (To get ready for something in advance.)

Example: We need to prepare for the presentation tomorrow.

Prevent from (To stop or hinder something from happening.)

Example: This medication will prevent you from getting sick.

Participate in (To take part in an activity or event.)

Example: She decided to participate in the charity marathon.

Proud of (To feel deep satisfaction or pleasure in someone’s achievements.)

Example: I am so proud of my team's achievements this year.

Qualify for (To meet the necessary standards or conditions for something.)

Example: He qualifies for a scholarship based on his grades.

Question about (To ask for information or clarification on something.)

Example: Do you have any questions about the report?

Respond to (To reply or react to something.)

Example: Please respond to the email as soon as possible.

Rely on (To depend on someone or something for support or help.)

Example: You can rely on me to help with the project.

Remind of (To cause someone to recall or think of something.)

Example: This song reminds me of my childhood.

Succeed in (To achieve a goal or complete a task successfully.)

Example: She succeeded in completing the marathon.

Stay with (To remain or reside with someone.)

Example: I will stay with my aunt while I visit the city.

Struggle with (To have difficulty or face challenges in doing something.)

Example: He struggles with the complexity of the math problems.

Talk about (To discuss or speak on a subject.)

Example: We need to talk about your performance at work.

Think of (To consider or come up with an idea or thought.)

Example: When I think of Paris, I remember the beautiful sights.

Tired of (To be fed up or bored with something.)

Example: I’m tired of listening to the same song over and over.

Trust in (To have confidence or faith in someone or something.)

Example: I trust in your judgment to make the right decision.

Use for (To employ something for a specific purpose.)

Example: This tool is used for cutting metal.

Victim of (To be harmed or affected by something, often a crime or event.) 

Example: She was a victim of identity theft.

Wait for (To remain in one place until something happens or arrives.)

Example: I’m waiting for the bus.

E.g-I must return before 3 p.m.

He will return within a month.

On (attached with something)

Over (if it is not attached)

Made from (Used when the original materials undergo a transformation to become something else, often resulting in a different form or substance.

Examples: The cake is made from flour.

Butter is made from milk.

Flour is made from wheat.

Made of (Used when the material is still recognizable in the final product and has not been significantly altered or transformed)

Examples:

"The table is made of wood."

"The necklace is made of gold."

In/Into/On/Onto (You can use either in/into or on/onto after the ‘get verb’ to mean getting into or out of a vehicle. However, it should be noted that in/into is not used to mean riding on the back of an animal, only on/onto should be used.)

He got in/into/on/onto a bus.

He got on/on to an elephant.

'Out of/Off (You can use either “out of” or “off” after the “get verb” to mean getting out of a vehicle. However, it should be noted that “out of” is not used after the “get verb” in the sense of getting off the back of an animal, only the off preposition should be used)

He got out of/off a bus.

She got off a camel.

He died of cancer/cholera/fever.

The labour died from hard work/hunger.

Krishna died in the accident last year.

The girl died by hanging herself.

Many people died for the country.

Live on (on food)

Live by (source of living)

Cows live on grass.

The beggar lives by begging.

Part With (leave something)

Part from (Farewell)

It is impossible to part with this job.

He parted from his friend.

Familiar with (having knowlenge)

Familiar to (Aquitance)

He is not familiar with mathematics.

The man is familiar to all.

'Over'   (the usage of 'Over')

Over is used to indicate that one object is not touching another object. such as-

The bird is flying over the tree.

The ceiling fan is over my head.

 'Into'  (the usage of 'Into')

Into is used to mean moving inward. such as-

The cat jumped into the well.

'Since'  Usage of 'Since':-)

He has been ill since last week.

It has been raining since yesterday.

He has been living in this town since 2003.

'Within'  - (Usage of 'Within':-)

'Within' should be used before it to indicate that an action or event occurred within a long period of time. such as-

Mr. Baruah will go to London within a month.

He came back home within ten hours.

He will finish the work within a week.

'Before' (Usage of 'Before')

The 'before' preposition is used to indicate that something is done before a certain time, to indicate that it is in front, to express meaning before. such as-

He will come back before 5 p.m.

He stood before me.

I get up from bed before dawn.

He reached home before dusk.

 'After'   (Usage of 'After)

In the Past Tense, the preposition 'after' is used after the take verb to express meaning before, after, to indicate similarity. such as-

He left the place after a year.

He came after me.

You take after your parents.

'Under'  -( Usage of 'Under':-))

The preposition 'under' should be used to indicate being under something, to indicate acting under a person or authority, to imply being under a command or discretion, to imply being led by someone. such as-

They are sitting under a tree.

The students are taking rast under a tree.

He works under me.

His prayer is under consideration.

The culprits are under the custody of the police.

India become free under the leadership of M.K. Gandhi.

The cat is under the table.

'Against'  - (Usage of 'Against')

The preposition 'against' is used to mean against or against, to mean to cut, to lean, to hit, etc., to mean to prepare for something. such as-

Asoka led his army against the enemy.

I said nothing against the dowry system.

He was leaning against the wall.

The truck stroke against a tree.

Everybody should collect something against the dull season.

'During'  - (Usage of 'During'

To indicate a wide period of a particular length, the preposition 'during' should be used before a known festival or event flow. such as-

My father was born during the second world war.

Architectural wonder of India developed during the Mughal period.

Cuckoos are seen during the spring season.

We enjoy mirth and merriment during the Rangali Bihu.

'Between, Among, Amongst'  -

(Usage of 'Between, Among, Amongst':-)

Use 'between' between two or two people and 'among' or 'amongst' between two or more people. such as-

He stood between Ram and Rahim.

He divided the apples among/amongst the boys.

'Till, Until'  - (Usage of 'Till, Until'

The till/until preposition is used to indicate the extent of time. such as-

I shall remain here till/until you return.

 'Across/Along' - (the use of Across/Along)

The preposition 'across' should be used to indicate flat movement and the preposition 'along' to indicate straight movement. such as-

He swam across the river.

He walked along the road.
